Coug's Best Buck
12 pt. whitetail

In 1992, I had gone without filling a bow permit yet, so on the day before the 2nd shotgun season in early December, I decided to give it one more try......and I was ready to take anything just for the meat. Still, I had found fresh scrapes a few days earlier and taking a nice buck was still in the back of my mind. After work, I hurriedly I dressed in my camo, grabbed my bow and was off as shooting light would not last much longer.

Soon after the drive to my area and walking a short distance I saw 3 does running across the open field toward the new scrapes. I walked briskly along the field edge headed for a favorite corner. Soon after passing through a gap between another field and the woods, I saw what appeared to be a nice buck approaching slowly with his nose to the ground nearly 100 yds away. All I could do was back up and hide behind briars and
weeds, just hoping he would stay on course. As I waited in anticipation, buck fever started.

Minutes seemed like hours, but the buck came into sight veering slightly as he turned toward the wooded hillside. I quickly drew my bow and sighted in as he was now quartering about 30 yards away. Finding a hole through the brush I was hiding in I released and the arrow found its mark completely passing through. This is my highest scoring buck to date with a gross of 154 3/8, netting 141 1/8. His inside spread is 21 1/2". Sometimes you need all the luck you can get!

9 pt. 1990 Buck

I had seen this buck on 3 separate occasions while scouting and still hunting, but never had the opportunity to really go after him although I kept a special note of his appearances. During the week of Thanksgiving in 1990, I was on vacation all week and so made my plans. On Sunday morning I rattled in a nice 7 pt. taking him.

Two days later with the wind just right, I decided to make a serious attempt at this 9 pt. Oversleeping, I arrived at my spot just as daylight was taking over. Crossing the barren field, I stepped on ice puddles and the crunching echoed throughout and across to the woods I was heading toward. As I neared the woods edge, I heard a deer walking in the leaves toward me. With my loc-on stand on my back, no arrow on the string, and my release still in my pocket I stepped to my left behind a large water oak tree, peered around and saw that buck heading in my direction! Hurriedly I strapped my release on, and tried to nock an arrow but found my eliminator button had slid against the nock. So with my gloves on and trying to hurry I nocked the arrow underneath the button. As I peeked back around the tree I drew my bow and at 8 steps there he was. I held higher than normal and released! The arrow passed through the front of his chest and exit.
